Intro to MTB Guiding starts in April

The Introductory Guide course in the Mountain & Quad Biking Adventure Guiding qualifications (MQB301) of the OAG is designed to train experienced riders to safely lead small group rides from beginners to low intermediate riders on green and blue, single track terrains in a wilderness environment, no more than 1 drive hour away from emergency medical care.

Course Essentials.

1. Group safety guiding
2. Trail-guiding and management
3. Riding skills and technique.
4. Guiding skills training, safety rules, class management and terrain communication.
5. Mechanical preparedness
6. Terrain change and safe riding pace.
7. Consistent positioning & balancing skills through a wide range of movement.
8. Efficient cadence and straight chain line.
9. Braking and non-skidding on loose terrain, using both brakes.
10. Climbing and descending on technical, single track (intermediate) terrain.
11. Banked and flat corners on various terrain surfaces.
12. Maintaining chosen line in technical (rooty/rocky/uneven) terrain.
13. Front & rear wheel lifts – standing
14. Seated front wheel lift, using a pedal stroke (very basic wheelie)
15. Switchbacks – slow, tight turns
16. Basic mechanics: adjusting a bike to fit, suspension sag and rebound set-up, flat tires, broken chains, replacing brake pads, adjusting headsets, correct cleaning and maintenance.

Expected Outcomes.

  1. Biking Exploeres must complete the MQB301 Worksheet (available upon registration).
  2. Participants must confidently ride at trail speed on intermediate terrain, including green, blue and “light” black trails.
  3. At the end of the course, participants must have a minimum of 36 hours of mountain biking experience and 48 hours of Wilderness First Aid Certification, or equivalent.

Dates, Costs & Assessments.

The MQB 301 course runs at the Shai Hills from Tuesday April 26, to Friday, April 292022 and costs 1,000-GHS. The Assessment cost is separate to that of the Training Course. The assessment consists of a written exam and a practical field assessment after candidates have recorded a total of 25 Days’ MTB experiences across a maximum of 100km in their log book.

Participant Requirements

The course is open to any reasonably healthy and physically capable person over the age of 18. Courses for younger participants can be arranged on request. Previous mountaineering experience is not required, but would be helpful. Participants must have an English speaking capability of SSCE Level. A minimum of four students is required for the course to run, and the maximum allowable number of students per course is 12. There is a maximum of 1 Instructor : 12 students for the practical assessment.


The OAG will provide all group and specialist equipment for this course, but students are encouraged to have and bring their own equipment where available. Students are required to have their own suitable outdoor clothing and footwear, and need to pack with the list below as a guide. Meals, water and tent-camping equipment are included in the fee. Return transport to Shai Hills, the training location, is each participant’s responsibility:

  • A 40-litre backpack
  • A 10-litre day pack
  • 1 good outdoor tent
  • A pair of good hiking boots
  • Outdoor walking sandals
  • A cap or hat
  • 3 water bottles
  • 3 sets of outdoor clothing
  • 1 sleeping bag or thick blanket
  • 1 sleeping mat
  • Wash kit – small towel, sponge and soap
  • 1 bowl for meals
  • A can of insect repellent
  • A box of matchsticks
  • Rain coat
  • 1 machete
  • Hiking poles
  • A compass
